15th Dec 2010 – Shuttering created for underpinning and scaffolding erected

After discovering a drain and inspection chamber that had not been picked up in the original survey, we had to re-think our approach to the foundations of the extension. The delay in pouring the foundations until they were approved by the building inspector meant delays to work because the process of meeting with the inspector on site and finalizing the proposals took about a week. Please see previous posts for more information on this.
The foundations have now been approved for our re-built energy efficient W/C block with underpins due to go under the neighbour’s extension. The gas meter was finally moved on the 9th of December and we have used a floor-mounted housing. One concern has been raised about the possibility of damage occurring to the meter housing as they have a plastic lid which could be kicked in by vandals: surely British Gas could improve the design of the housing? However the option has enabled us to limit connections through the external insulation and in so doing limit thermal bridges.
When I visited site in the run up to Christmas I found the scaffolding had been erected, the shuttering had been constructed and the foundations were ready to be poured. However the cold weather may mean that the pouring of the concrete will have to be delayed until early January.
