The existing boiler will be retained and converted to work with the new solar hot water system

With both retrofit projects bere:architects are aiming to achieve an Enerphit certification. Enerphit is a new Passivhaus standard aimed specifically at retrofits. Enerphit recoginses the difficulty of achieving a full Passivhaus standard in existing buildings without excessive cost or intrusion to the existing building. Enerphit is a good low energy standard which addresses the importance of retrofits in achieving our necessary carbon reductions.

One major part of achieving this certificate will be the implementation of a Heat Recovery Ventilation system (HRV). In viewing the property today with the M & E engineer we took note of the existing boiler and cylinder and the proposed routes of the extract and supply for the HRV system.

The proposed routes of the ducting for the HRV system avoid penetrating the airtightness layer in the attic in too many places so as to minimise the risk of air leakage and to limit the amount of making good needed to the penetrations. Where possible the routes of the ducts and associated boxing out run next to the chimney breast in order to have as minimal visual impact as possible.
